Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Mizan Bin Mohammad Aslam
President and CEO
Islamic University College of Perlis

Associate Professor Mohd Mizan bin Mohammad Aslam is the first President & CEO of the Islamic university College of Perlis (KUIPs). He is a former Director of the Sustainable Development Unit, University Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and also a senior lecturer at the Centre for Communication Technology and Human Development (PTKPI) since 2003. He graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Syariah Law and Master of Arts in Islamic Civilization and History of Education. He obtained his doctorate (PhD) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in the field of strategic studies.

He is particularly interested in the field of strategic studies and conflict resolution. Incidents of violence and anarchy that are taking place around the world, especially the Islamic world, have made him very critical of the situation and he has articulated his ideas and proffered solutions related to this issue. Muslims’ failure to distinguish between justice seeking and freedom of struggle with terrorism and extremism is the main subject of his research.

Mizan introduced the theory of 'typology of radicalism' hierarchy, a theory that helps classify how an individual acts and the transformation in his daily activities as ordinary follower to activist until he becomes a terrorist. His research interest has received much attention and has been used as a reference by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and related agencies.

Mizan started his career as a lecturer at the Management and Science University (MSU) before joining UniMAP in 2003. Prior to his career with MSU, he was a teacher in a secondary school (SMAP), a secondary-school student who obtained 5 principals in the STPM examination in 1995 and became one of the top students in Malaysia. He also achieved outstanding honours during his degree and masters level studies. He collected six major awards during his PhD studies such as the New Zealand Study Abroad Award (NZPSAA) 2007 and 2008, Best Research Paper Waikato University 2008, PhD Submission Award 2009 and ‘Victoria-School of Government Research Award’ 2008 and 2009.

His return to Malaysia after completing his PhD with distinction allowed him to be entrusted to manage UNIMAP Sustained Development Unit until 2013. In addition, he also held various positions and was interested in various areas related to administrative, spiritual and physical development at UNIMAP. He is also an associate member of the Association for Public Policy Analysis & Management (APPAM) and Executive Member of the Peace and Collaborative Development Network (PCDN) which enabled him to discuss on issues related to policy and security management and global conflict resolution.

He is also a member of the Review Panel of the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) which oversees the process of accreditation and monitoring of the academic quality and graduates produced in accordance with the aspirations of higher education.

On the principle of 'nothing is impossible' Mizan sees that KUIPs will create unparalleled success if given ample opportunity to grow. The open higher-education arena and competitive nature of the playing field will spur KUIPs to be at the forefront in competing for glory in both the national and international level. Nothing is impossible for KUIPs to become one of the well-known Islamic institutions in the region. Five years from now, KUIPs will create its own glory in order to produce successful people in this world and the hereafter based on the principles of Syumul, Dynamism and Taqwa.
